Vote No on all Referendum this November
Memphis voted to implement instant runoff voting and term-limits ten years ago
In 2008, over 70% of Memphis referendum voters said they wanted the City to use Term Limits of 2 terms and Instant Runoff Voting (IRV). IRV lets voters rank their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices. If no one gets a majority, we use the rankings to determine a majority winner, without having to run a separate, expensive, low-turnout “runoff” election–which, in Memphis, dilutes the votes of low-income, African-American, and disabled voters. IRV’s used in over 10 U.S. cities and the entire state of Maine. It’s been endorsed by Barack Obama & John McCain in other states, and by many local leaders here.
City Council is trying to trick us to repealing those laws
Now that Term Limits and IRV are finally ready to kick in, incumbent City Council members want to use 3 ballot measures to undo what we’ve already voted, before Term Limits or IRV can even be tried. These are the same leaders who quietly tried to get Nashville to outlaw IRV altogether, which would have made a sham of this November’s referendum. {Hyperlink to article about that}. Worse, they’re using misleading language to trick voters into voting “Yes” to undoing what we said in 2008. {Hyperlink to article about lawsuit, misleading ballot language}.
Save Term Limits and Instant Runoff Voting by voting “No” on ALL Referendum this November
Along with County Mayor Lee Harris, former County Mayor Mark Luttrell, Rep. Steve Cohen, Councilwoman Janis Fullilove, former Councilman Myron Lowery, and State Sen. Mark Norris, we are urging Memphis voters to vote NO on ALL three referendum.
